New HDR 3D Brachytherapy Equipment!

The Chihuahua Oncology Center already has the “ELEKTA Flexitron” Brachytherapy equipment with a high automatic dose rate, which allows the tumor to be identified via imaging, guaranteeing an effective and precise treatment.

What is Brachytherapy?
Brachytherapy or Internal Radiotherapy is a type of Radiotherapy that allows a higher dose of radiation to be delivered to the tumor or near the tumor, to damage the DNA of cancer cells and destroy their ability to reproduce, divide and grow.

How does HDR 3D Brachytherapy work?

Brachytherapy works by placing a radiation source directly into or next to a cancerous tumor within the body . This allows the radiation to be aimed precisely to ensure that the tumor receives the most effective dose to kill the cancer cells. This personalized approach also reduces the risk of any unnecessary damage to healthy tissues and organs near the tumor.
Radiation Oncologists and Medical Physicists plan, calculate and administer Brachytherapy using highly advanced software, to determine how and where in the body radiation should be delivered.
General anesthesia is applied so the patient does not feel any pain during or after the procedure; radiation is delivered precisely and accurately to the tumor, using special applicators.
The applicators are carefully placed in the correct position by using various imaging techniques, it can be a tomography or any other higher resolution study (MRI or PET-CT). A small source of radiation is then prepared and delivered to the treatment site through the applicators.

Benefits
